CONGRATULATIONS WILVOS! The Annual Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards were once again held in 2019 to recognize contributions to the community in different fields.
WILVOS were very proud to be a joint winner in the Environment and Sustainability section, sharing this award with the very deserving Junior Eco-Leaders, Coolum and North Shore Coast Care. It was a huge surprise to WILVOS attendees Sylvia Whiting OAM and Lisa Domogala.
For over twenty-five years The Wildlife Volunteers Association Inc (better known as WILVOS) has rescued, rehabilitated and released orphaned and injured native animals on the Sunshine Coast and hinterland areas. There have been many ups and downs over the years, with finances stretched to the limit in the early years. WILVOS had great support from the community and from people such as the then local MP Peter Wellington. WILVOS continued on to become a well-respected group of hard-working volunteers who all strive to make a difference to the future of our wildlife and to our environment.
The stability of the organization has been due to the incredible amount of ‘behind the scenes’ work done by Chairperson, Sylvia Whiting OAM. This very quietly spoken, unassuming lady just gets it done. Somehow she manages to juggle family, work and numerous native animals, along with never-ending administration tasks.
WILVOS have also been lucky in having some very dedicated members join over the past years who are willing to work hard for our wildlife. Getting people to care for wildlife is much easier than getting people to handle hotline rosters, workshops, manage data entry and maintain websites. Ben from Ausgraphics has been so supportive of WILVOS and has put so much of his own time into the website and technology side.
This award is shared with all our loyal and supportive members. WILVOS appreciates the support of the Sunshine Coast Regional Council, and their acknowledgement of our contribution to the community with this award. Our thanks too to the veterinarians and members of the public who make the struggle to save our wildlife that little bit easier.
