Emergency Hotline: 07 5441 6200

What a glorious time of year. The birds are singing and the bees are buzzing. Though I can hear heavy machinery working on the latest nearby development, at least it is bare cane land and not a forest of trees full of wildlife.

Through the WILVOS 5441 6200 Hotline it was lovely to experience another successful possum reunion between mother and Joey. The little one had been too adventurous for his own good and had fallen out of a tree, onto some bales of hay.

After a check for injuries, he was given some glucodin water – just a very small amount in a shallow lid so he couldn’t put his nose in the fluid. He lapped it up and then curled up to sleep.

As it was just after lunchtime, it was too early to try to reunite with his mother. The local birds would have gone into ‘harass mode’ and adult possums would be staying well hidden.

After dusk the mother was seen coming down into the fork of an old mango tree near the hay bales. We quickly took the little joey out in his pouch and put him in the tree. Mum watched us intently. As soon as we stepped back away from the area, she charged down, sat back and her joey jumped onto her belly so fast. They had the biggest hug!

A delight to see and another rewarding day in the day of a wildlife carer.
