How good to see some Sunday sunshine! It has been a tough time for many people. After sighing
with relief that we missed the devastating cyclonic winds, the flooding came. Noone expected a
follow up deluge so soon . Hopefully, everyone is receiving the help they need.
Past days have seen some wildlife emerging in various stages of debilitation, either from injury or
starvation. Birds such as lorikeet and honeyeater species find it almost impossible to find any
nectar. Seed eaters suffer if they eat seed that has become mouldy. On the other hand, a friend
said her local peewees were having a picnic, picking off the multitudes of worms as they came to the
surface of the saturated ground.
It is always lovely to see people still take the time to look after our native animals. A call came
through the WILVOS 5441 6200 Hotline for a wallaby that had been hit by a car and was on the side
of the road in Nambour. A father and son driving past saw movement and thought the wallaby was
alive. Knowing the cruelty of just leaving it there to die a slow death, they turned around and went
back to check the animal. The mother was actually dead, but there was movement in her pouch.
These lovely men took the dead mother home with joey still in pouch. This was very thoughtfull as it
minimized the stress on the joey until a WILVOS arrived soon after and carefully removed the young
one. Little Rory is now in care and doing well.
Thank you to all who make that life-saving phone call. So many native animals are saved
unnecessary suffering.
